Intervals, torques and fluid specifications vary by engine rating, build and duty, and the manufacturer's own operation and maintenance manual is the authority. Maintenance parts by system
Lubrication
Oil capacity: approximately 28 litres (7.5 gallons) with filter
Oil specification: Caterpillar ECF-3, or oils meeting API CJ-4 or newer; SAE 15W-40 for most marine conditions, SAE 10W-30 for cold climates, SAE 20W-50 or straight 40-weight for high ambient temperatures; the wrong oil can damage the high-pressure oil pump and the HEUI injectors
Parts: spin-on engine oil filters, oil cooler assembly, crankcase breather filter, oil pressure regulator
Fuel system
Fuel: marine diesel to ASTM D975 or ISO 8217, minimum cetane 40 (45 or above recommended), sulphur per local regulations, water no more than 500 ppm and particulates no more than 10 mg per litre; the HEUI system is particularly sensitive to fuel quality, and water or contamination causes rapid injector failure
Parts: HEUI fuel injectors (set of 6), high-pressure oil pump that powers the injectors, fuel transfer pump, primary and secondary fuel filters, fuel pressure regulator, injection actuation pressure sensor
Air intake and turbocharging
Parts: turbocharger assembly, primary and secondary air filter elements, air-to-water aftercooler, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold, exhaust mixing elbow
Cooling system
Coolant: Extended Life Coolant (ELC), or conventional ethylene-glycol coolant with SCA additives, at a minimum of 50 per cent coolant and 50 per cent distilled water; capacity approximately 38–45 litres depending on installation
Raw water: clean sea water or fresh water at the proper flow rate through an adequate strainer to protect the raw-water pump and heat exchanger
Parts: raw-water pump and impeller kit, heat exchanger assembly, engine coolant pump, thermostat assembly, expansion tank, heat exchanger anodes, coolant filter and conditioner
Drive and electrical
Parts: drive belts, starter motor, alternator (typically 100–135 A), ECM, oil pressure, coolant temperature and boost pressure sensors among others, wiring harness assemblies
Common faults and their causes
HEUI injector faults
Symptoms: rough running, misfiring, hard starting, white smoke, poor fuel economy, diagnostic codes
Causes: contaminated fuel, water in fuel, low injection actuation pressure, injector wear
Prevention: premium fuel, regular filter changes, proper oil maintenance, diagnostic monitoring
High-pressure oil system faults
Symptoms: loss of power, hard starting, low injection actuation pressure codes, rough idle
Causes: high-pressure oil pump wear, internal leaks, contaminated engine oil, sensor failure
Prevention: regular oil changes with the correct specification, oil analysis, seal replacement
Aftercooler corrosion
Symptoms: coolant in the intake manifold, loss of coolant, white exhaust smoke, overheating
Causes: internal corrosion, failed seals, inadequate coolant maintenance, galvanic corrosion
Prevention: correct coolant mixture and maintenance, regular inspection, anode replacement
Turbocharger failure
Symptoms: loss of power, excessive black smoke, high exhaust temperature, unusual noise
Causes: oil starvation, contaminated oil, a damaged compressor wheel, bearing failure
Prevention: quality oil changed regularly, air filter maintenance, proper warm-up and cool-down
Raw-water pump failure
Symptoms: overheating, high-temperature alarm, reduced water flow from the exhaust
Causes: impeller deterioration, seal failure, bearing wear, debris damage
Prevention: annual impeller replacement, intake strainer maintenance, proper winterisation
ECM and sensor faults
Symptoms: warning lights, power derating, erratic operation, diagnostic trouble codes
Causes: corrosion, water intrusion, vibration damage, electrical connection problems
Prevention: regular electrical inspection, proper wire routing, corrosion protection
Diagnosis uses Cat Electronic Technician (ET) with a communication adapter, or a compatible marine diagnostic tool; regular scans identify developing faults before they cause failures

Troubleshooting
Engine will not start
Verify battery voltage (12.6 V minimum) and starter motor operation
Check the fuel supply, bleed air from the system and inspect the fuel filters for contamination or restriction
Check ECM power and earth connections, scan for diagnostic codes and verify the injection actuation pressure sensor reading
Overheating
Check the raw-water intake strainer for blockage and the impeller condition
Verify coolant level and concentration, and check for leaks
Inspect the heat exchanger for blockage or anode depletion, the thermostat, the coolant pump and the aftercooler
Loss of power
Check the air filter restriction indicator, the turbocharger for damage or excessive play, and boost pressure
Test the fuel filters for restriction and check fuel quality and supply pressure
Scan the ECM for fault codes, test injection actuation pressure and verify exhaust back-pressure is within specification
Abnormal smoke
Black: restricted air intake, turbocharger failure, overload, injector faults, low boost
Blue: oil consumption, turbocharger seal failure, worn piston rings
White: coolant leak into the combustion chamber, low compression, injector faults, a cold engine
Unusual noise
Knocking: injector faults, timing, bearing wear, low-cetane fuel
Whistling: turbocharger compressor fault or an intake air leak
Grinding: bearing failure, gear damage, starter gear faults
Rattling: loose exhaust components, heat-shield vibration, worn engine mounts
Emergency procedures
Overheat alarm: reduce load to idle, check raw-water discharge at the exhaust and the coolant level in the expansion tank, watch the temperature gauge, shut down if it keeps rising, and never open the cooling system when hot
Low oil pressure: shut down immediately, check the oil level and look for leaks; do not restart until the cause is found and corrected
HEUI pressure fault: reduce load, check oil level and quality, scan the ECM, watch the injection actuation pressure and shut down if it keeps falling
Air in the fuel system: find and repair the leak, bleed at the filter housings, purge with the priming pump, check every connection and monitor for repeat entry
Installation and records
The engine requires professional installation with correct alignment, mounting and integration with the vessel's systems, and the electronic controls must be configured for the specific rating: robust engine beds, properly sized cooling-water plumbing, a fuel system to Cat specification with proper filtration, an exhaust designed for back-pressure control, correctly configured electronic throttle and instrumentation, comprehensive monitoring and alarms, and adequate ventilation. Service records should log every task with dates and engine hours, parts replaced with part and serial numbers, oil analysis trends, diagnostic codes and their resolution, fuel quality events and any abnormal operation; they support warranty claims, recurring-fault diagnosis and resale value.
Genuine parts
Caterpillar engines benefit from an extensive global parts network, and the components that must be genuine are the HEUI injectors and their related parts, electronic controls and sensors, turbocharger assemblies, high-pressure oil pump components and major internal engine parts; non-genuine parts in these systems may void the warranty, compromise reliability and lead to expensive failures. TD Engine Parts supplies genuine, brand-new Caterpillar parts sourced through authorised dealer networks, each with a 12-month warranty, shipped worldwide by DHL Express with the freight quoted alongside the parts.
