Worked examples: how an order runs

Worked example: emergency MTU impeller kit, Alicante

72ft Sunseeker at anchor in Greek islands - turquoise water, white yacht

Illustrative worked example. A 72 ft charter yacht loses an engine to a failed raw-water impeller four days before its next charter. Genuine MTU parts are on the quay in Alicante within two working days. Vessel: 72 ft motor yacht, charter Engines: twin MTU 12V 2000 M94 Location: Alicante, Spain

The challenge

On passage from Alicante to Ibiza with guests aboard, the port engine of a 72 ft charter yacht raised an overheating alarm and was shut down. A local engineer found a failed raw-water impeller and recommended replacing the impeller on both engines while the boat was alongside. The next charter was four days away, and the nearest dealer quoted ten working days for genuine MTU parts.

The solution

The captain sent the engine serial number and a photograph of the failed impeller on WhatsApp. Within the hour the parts were confirmed in UK stock and quoted, with the DHL Express freight to Alicante shown alongside. Impeller kits for both engines, gaskets and anodes were collected the same afternoon and delivered to the marina on the second working day, then fitted by an MTU-authorised service partner and sea-trialled the same day.

The result

  • Back in service a day before the charter began, with no cancellation

  • Genuine MTU parts on both engines, with full traceability for the service record

  • Two working days from the first message to parts on the quay

Worked example: Caterpillar C18 service kits, Palma de Mallorca

55ft Azimut Flybridge

Illustrative worked example. A 55 ft charter yacht needs 800-hour service kits for both engines in peak season, with a classification survey due. Genuine Cat kits reach the yard in Palma within two working days. Vessel: 55 ft flybridge yacht, charter Engines: twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT Location: Palma de Mallorca, Spain

The challenge

A family-owned 55 ft flybridge yacht based in Palma de Mallorca was due its 800-hour service on both Caterpillar C18 engines at the height of the season, with charters booked through July and August. The local yard had had the service kits on order from the mainland for ten days with no delivery date, and a classification survey in September required full documentation with genuine Cat parts.

The solution

The owner sent both engine serial numbers, the current hours and the yard's parts list on WhatsApp. Complete 800-hour service kits were confirmed in UK stock and quoted the same day, with Cat part numbers and certifications and the DHL Express freight to Palma shown alongside. The kits were delivered to the yard on the second working day and both engines were serviced by an authorised Cat technician, with the sea trial on day five.

The result

  • Both engines serviced on schedule, with no charter cancellations

  • Complete service documentation with genuine Cat parts for the classification survey

  • Two working days from enquiry to parts at the yard
